Our idolising of children is increasingly out of control.

Why someone would want to establish a cost breakdown of how much it is going to cost to raise their child and put them through university is so missing the point the pro-creation?

Yet, that is what they are doing over at a site called “baby center”

Are we really that focussed on the bottom line? Has the latest financial tsunami taught us nothing?

There is so much more to this that dollars and cents. Here end the lesson for the day.

Another week has passed. Another cartoon appears over at Whispers at Bedtime.

“ask mum” is a little reflection on the challenges we dads face during those infant years. there is something between mums and babes that we can’t quite tap into…

Geeky Pets over at Geek Dad

October 21st, 2008

I have a piece over at GeekDad today on interesting pets for kids. It road tests a few options that we have, or have had in our household. I was hoping for a few more ideas and they have started to roll in.

The pseudoscorpians remind me of a few creatures we pulled out of the dam last spring that people were calling “water scorpians”.

And, the degu is very cute.

Hope a few more suggestions roll in.

Josie Fraser says some really interesting things about new media literacy.

Her approach is great, she gives recognition to the e-safety issues and progress made on cyber-bulling and associate issues in the UK, but points out there has been very little discussion in the UK about the breadth of new media literacy.

Digital literacy then refers to a set of knowledge and competencies (including social skills and cultural competencies) required by technological, social and economic changes in society…It includes e-safety and wellbeing, but also includes collaboration and communication skills, rights and responsibilities, ethical and environmental issues, commercial practices, privacy and security issues, digital identity and citizenship, along with finding, evaluating and applying information.

Australia is even further behind than the UK. We haven’t got beyond food advertising and obesity. Our public policy makers will be left behind, as children and young people continue to change the way they interact and engage with the world.

I’d love to see some of the energy being put into social media innovations and marketing put into the development of ideas for changes to Australia’s primary and secondary curriculum to included new media literacy.
