Playstation 3…everyone gets a say
March 22nd, 2007
Along with a host of other commentators I get my 2 cents on the launch of the new Playstation 3 in an article in The Australian today.
Of course, Sony continue to push the fact the new Playstation 3 is aimed at the 18-30 year-old market. Contributing to the cause of keeping young men in a perpetual state of youth.
In our household, there is an ongoing issue about whether in the future we will have a gaming console. As usual, I am not against them. Sure, against the price, against the lack of G-rated and accessible games that don't promote sex and violence at a level children under 15 are ready for and in a way that is exploitative. But, I have fond memories of programming the Commodore 64 and trying to beat those electricity-firing robots in Impossible Mission.
Screen time is a part of the modern world. The issue isn't that children watch TV or play computer games - the issue is that we don't spend enough time doing it with our children and talking to them about what we see as positive and negative in it. Too much of anything is bad, but that doesn't mean we should write it off completely.
Until such time my two boys will have to be content playing online at ABC Kids.
