All of this homework does not make our children any smarter; it does not prepare them any better for standardized tests; and, in many cases, homework is not graded, so it doesn’t even help with grades and getting into a good school! Not all homework is bad- it is the amount. For example, 50 math problems is ridiculous- for any age. Either they get it or they don’t. You can determine if a child understands a concept with three or four problems. It’s the same thing with writing spelling words you already know how to spell over and over again- why? A 6 year-old does not need to come home, sit still, focus, be on the clock and have his parent “chunk” more schoolwork for him to do. Parents know that their children and their family lives are suffering because of too much homework, but we are reluctant to demand change. I applaud parents that say, “Enough!”

I’m fascinated with the persistence that the psychological idea that “the brain is a blank sheet” has on the way we structure education. Psychology is back tracking on this big time and we now know the brain comes complete with a whole heap of pre-formatted wiring based on genetics. Yet, “rote” learning and traditional examinations are still the core way we run so much of our education - including homework. Angela - I couldn’t agree more.

I have an 8yo child with writing difficulties. We therefore have a set of tasks each week to do for his Occupational Therapy and writing practice. Add this to the set school homework (reading, maths, fortnightly speech preparation/practice and additional special projects) and we are overflowing.
Our kids should come home from school and ride their bikes (gross motor skills and exercise), play with their lego or their dolls (fine motor skills)and just have some down time.
I would love to say “Enough”, but it is my son who “gets in trouble” if his work isn’t done.
