Bratz, Brands & Brains

Was impressed at yesterday’s filming of the Insight program…they engaged really well with the children in the audience in a respectful way.
I made the point that the children demonstrated that they have the capacity to talk about and understand issues relating to advertising and branding…hopefully that doesn’t end up on the cutting room floor.
Anyway - you can see it at 7.30pm tonight on SBS.

Hi I just wanted to ask about the linkage between lack of respect for children and idolising? What makes you think that idolising is the primary problem? Are there any journal articles relating to this that you could point me towards?
Thanks for a really interesting blog. For a while now I have been thinking that child abuse would be best tackled by giving children the vote, perhaps at 12. I think it is my experience of abuse that has made me particularly respectful of the agency of my disabled son. Despite serious developmental issues he began expressing opinion about political issues at about 11. His opinions are considered and quite sophisticated. To me it is serious violation of his rights that he does not have a political voice when from the age of 2 he as been the client of a whole range of government services. None of these services have been appropriate to his needs, being an ad hoc compilation of services based around aged care models. Treating children like the elderly is insulting to both and I think reflects society’s lack of respect for the agency of both groups. Will try and get hold of your book now, cheers.
